Beckham wants to bring Sergio Ramos to Inter Miami CF - Highest scoring defender since 2000
The list of high profile players linked with David Beckham's Inter Miami CF is long. In Gonzalo Higuaín, Rodolfo Pizarro, and Blaise Matuidi, the club has already signed three high-profile players. On top of that, the club has been linked with Sergio Romero, Edinson Cavani, and even Lionel Messi. Now Sergio Ramos can be added to that growing list.
On Sunday, AS journalist Manuel de Juan reported that Beckham is currently trying to convince Ramos to sign for the MLS expansion side that made the MLS Cup playoffs during its inaugural season. The report highlights that Ramos is without a contract at the end of the 2020/21 season and could join the club as a free agent.
There are, however, some major obstacles to overcome before the 34-year-old could make the transition to MLS. First, Ramos is currently negotiating a new deal with Real Madrid, and it appears staying at Los Blancos remains a priority at the moment. After all, Ramos is a legend at the club and in 660 games has scored 100 goals, which is not just a club record for a defender but also makes him the highest-scoring defender in Europe since 2000.
Sergio Ramos to Inter Miami - Defender would be the most valuable in MLS
The second obstacle is his salary. Ramos is believed to earn $20-30 million a season at Real at the moment, and even with a significant pay cut would fall in the Designated Player (DP) category. Inter Miami currently have two senior DPs (Higuaín and Pizarro) and two Young Designated Players in Matías Pellegrini and Julían Carranza. However, MLS salary cap rules are changing ahead of the 2021 season, making it potentially possible for the club to add a third senior DP in their current wage structure.
With those parameters in mind, signing Ramos would be a significant boost for the club and the league. His market value of $15.4 million would make him the most valuable defender in MLS and the third most valuable player in the league together with Josef Martínez.
