Crystal Palace to sign Mateta - 3rd most expensive departure in Mainz's history
According to a report by The Athletic, Crystal Palace are in the final stages of signing 1.FSV Mainz 05 striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The striker will be loaned for 18 months to the mid-table Premier League side. Bild has since confirmed the story.
The Athletic report that Crystal Palace will pay €3 million for the initial loan deal and that the club will have to buy the striker for €15 million in 2022. Bild's numbers are a bit different. The German newspaper reported an initial loan fee of €3.5 million and an obligation to buy in the €14m to €17m range. That amount would make Mateta the third most expensive departure in the club's history, behind Abdou Diallo (€28m to BVB) and Jean-Philippe Gbamin (€25m to Everton).
Crystal Palace were already interested in Mateta last summer. The striker has scored ten goals in 17 games this season but has struggled for a spot in the starting XI recently. The Frenchman was not in the squad for Mainz's Tuesday game against Wolfsburg. Mateta is already on his way to England to complete his medical and his new club are hopeful he can play against West Ham next week.
