All Premier League players not participating in the European Championship have received a new market value and this time the 175 devaluations are clearly in the majority. This is also the case for some of the biggest stars such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool or Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Among the biggest winners are Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester) and former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa).

“After a rather disappointing season for Liverpool, which was only turned around last-minute, Salah goes down despite good scoring stats. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it has become less likely that transfer fees beyond the €100 million mark will still be paid for top earners around 30 in the near future,” Daniel Busch, area manager UK, explains the devaluation of the Egyptian from €110 million to €100 million.

Salah’s teammate Mané, to whom the same criteria apply, is hit even harder. After a mixed season, the Senegalese has to accept a drop of €15 million to €85 million and falls out of the absolute top group in the international market value ranking.

Consequently, Jürgen Klopp’s team drops from over €1 billion to under €900 million in total.

There are also several downgrades at Arsenal, in whose ranks no less than ten players have been devalued. Top earner Aubameyang, who drops from €35 million to €25 million and thus to a level at which he was last at Borussia Dortmund in 2015, receives the biggest minus.

Leicester’s Ndidi pushes into the world’s top - On par with Fabinho

Meanwhile, ex-Arsenal keeper Martínez, whom the Londoners sold to Aston Villa for €17.4 million last summer, earns another plus. The Argentine rises by €5 million to now €30 million. Busch says: “After his transfer, Martínez was immediately an ever-present keeper and one of the main factors that the club had nothing to do with the battle against relegation. Having kept 15 clean sheets, he even equalled Brad Friedel’s club record and also shone with strong control of the penalty area.”

Leicester’s Ndidi was playing his way into the international top ranks this season and increased his market value from €50 million to €60 million. He thus shares fifth place in the ranking of the world’s most valuable defensive midfielders with Liverpool’s Fabinho.

“Thanks to his performances, he is causing more speculation than ever about a move to one of the big clubs. Rumours are mainly about Manchester United, who could bring more balance to their midfield with the Nigerian,” Busch explains.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees. The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
