Following in the footsteps of Napoli star striker Victor OsimhenSerie A now has another player that has reached the €100 million mark. In the latest Transfermarkt market value update of the Italian top-flight, which has seen no less than 127 players get new market values, there’s little doubt that Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez is the biggest winner after seeing his value reach an all-time high. Thanks in part to their new Argentine captain, the Nerazzurri’s overall squad market value has increased by €40m and most notably overtaken AC Milan (+€14m to €543m) and sit just €25m below Napoli’s overall squad market value of €588m, which increased by €10m in this update.

After scoring 11 goals and picking up a further two assists in the first 10 games of the season, the Inter striker has earned an increase of €15m to his market value to a new value of €100m. Among strikers in the European top-flights, Osimhen (€120m) along with Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé (both €180m) are ahead of the world champion.

"Martínez is almost single-handedly making up for the departures of Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku right now, as Marcus Thuram has so far shone primarily as a creator of goals,” said Jatin Dietl, Transfermarkt Area Manager for Italy. “As captain, he carries a team that functions very well, especially offensively, and also seems to have taken a decisive step in terms of consistency.” Dietl added: “Added to this is the past transfer market which has shown that €100m  transfers are as common again after the pandemic as they were before - Martínez can be trusted with such a transfer fee, should he ever leave Inter." Four players moved clubs for at least €100m last summer, more than any other transfer window before it.

In addition to Martínez, new signing Thuram (+€8m to €40m) has also settled in quickly with 10 goals and assists to his name already this season. Fellow impressive new signing Davide Frattesi (+€5m to €30m) and Italy left-back Federico Dimarco (+€10m to €45m) have also been big drivers in Inter’s squad value shooting up in value. The latter of which is now in the top five most valuable left-backs in the world.

Roma biggest losers from update - Juventus grounds for hope

After an extremely disappointing start to the season, Roma are the biggest market value losers among all Serie A clubs. With a decrease in overall squad market value of €19m to €362m, there are clear issues in the squad. Whether it be the badly injured Tammy Abraham (-€5m to €35m), the underperforming Renato Sanches (-€1m to €14m) or even club captain Lorenzo Pellegrini (-€5m to €30m). "With Pellegrini, it is still the case that he rarely uses his clear talent to decide games. He failed to step forward and lead the team out of its poor form in the start of the season, continuing his declining performances from the previous season," notes Dietl.

In notable contrast, Juventus have enjoyed a surprisingly solid start to the new season and it’s no surprise that winger Federico Chiesa has played a large part in that. After a dreadful season that saw the Italian international miss large chunks of the previous campaign through injury and a drop in market value by €25m, Chiesa has now picked up five goals and assists in seven games and as a result seen his market value bounce back. The 25-year-old star has gained a €5m increase to now be worth €45m and there’s little doubt that such a value could once against skyrocket if he can avoid injury this season and get back to winning games for the Turin giants.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
