Start of the K League season - Doneil Henry's Bluewings defeated
South Korean champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors have had a successful start to the 2020 K League season. The hosts defeated Suwon Samsung Bluewings with former Vancouver Whitecaps defender Doneil Henry 1-0. 41-year-old striker Dong-gook Lee scored the goal.
The captain scored with a header from a Jun-ho Son corner and has now scored in all 22 seasons he has played in Korea's topflight. At that point, the visiting side had already been down a man after Terry Antonis was sent off with a red card.
Jeonbuk dominated the game but lacked determination in the attack. The Suwon created the most dangerous moment, but Adam Taggart failed to score in the 20th minute. The 26-year-old forward was the top scorer last season, but, in this instant, Taggart was unable to capitalize on a major chance. Jeonbuk, in the meantime, struggled to create chances despite being the more dominant team.
Then right after the break, Doneil Henry played the ball with his hand inside the box. The incident was reviewed, but the referee team decided against a penalty. The champions reacted and brought the 41-year-old Lee and Takahiro Kunimoto to create an extra spark in the attack. It worked, Lee would eventually score the winner.
